Children’s dentistry at Compass Dental Care in Parap makes the dentist a positive experience from the very first visit — using gentle tell-show-do techniques, happy gas for nervous kids, and CDBS bulk-billing for eligible children so early habits form without stress or surprise costs.
Making the dentist a positive experience
The way a child feels about the dentist is often set in the first few visits — and it tends to last a lifetime. That's why our whole approach to children's dentistry at Compass Dental Care is built around trust, not treatment. A first appointment is usually nothing more than a friendly chat, a ride in the chair, and a gentle count of the teeth. No pressure, no surprises, and never any judgement about how things have been at home.
Families come to us from across Parap and the wider Darwin area because their children actually look forward to coming back. A child who grows up comfortable at the dentist becomes an adult who keeps their teeth for life — and that early confidence is one of the most valuable things preventive dentistry can give them.
When should your child start?
The general guidance in Australia is for a child's first dental visit to happen around their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears — usually around 12 months of age. Parents are often surprised by how early that is, but the earlier we meet your child, the more we can do to prevent problems rather than fix them.
These early visits let us spot decay risk before it becomes decay, give you practical advice tailored to your child's age, and — just as importantly — let your child get used to the sights and sounds of a dental practice while there's nothing to worry about. From there, we'll recommend a check-up schedule that suits your child, usually every six months.
What happens at a child's visit
A relaxed welcome
We take time to let your child settle in. You're welcome to stay alongside them, and we let them explore the chair, the little mirror and the tools at their own pace before anything begins.
A gentle examination
We check the teeth that have come through, watch how the jaw and bite are developing, and look for any early signs of decay. For younger children this is often done with you holding them — a knee-to-knee position that keeps them feeling safe.
Advice you can actually use
You'll leave with clear, practical guidance on brushing technique, fluoride, snack and drink choices, and habits like thumb-sucking or bottle use — all tailored to your child's age and needs, and never delivered as a lecture.
Gentle techniques for anxious children
Some children take the dentist in their stride; others need a little more time and reassurance. We're set up for both. Our core method is tell-show-do — we explain each step in words a child understands, show them the instrument on a finger or a hand, then carry out the step exactly as promised. Nothing happens that we haven't already shown them first, which is often all it takes to turn fear into curiosity.
We also use gradual desensitisation, breaking bigger visits into smaller, manageable steps across appointments so a nervous child builds confidence rather than being overwhelmed. And for children who need extra help to relax, happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available — a mild sedative breathed through a little mask that keeps them calm while fully awake, and wears off within minutes. If we think it would help, we'll talk it through with you first; it's charged at $144 per 30 minutes only if it's used.
Prevention: the heart of children's dentistry
The best dental treatment for a child is the one they never need. Most of what we do for young patients is aimed squarely at prevention, so small teeth stay healthy while the habits that protect them for life take root.
Fissure sealants
The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves that trap food and are hard for a small toothbrush to clean. A fissure sealant is a thin protective coating painted over those grooves — quick, painless, and one of the most effective ways to prevent decay in the teeth children rely on most.
Fluoride
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse the very earliest signs of decay. We'll advise on the right toothpaste and amount for your child's age, and can apply a professional fluoride treatment during a visit where it's helpful.
Diet and brushing habits
So much of a child's dental health is decided at home. We give straightforward advice on limiting sugary drinks and snacks, brushing twice a day with the right technique, and supervising brushing until children can manage it well on their own — practical changes that make a real difference.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), explained
Cost should never stand between a child and healthy teeth, and for many families the CDBS means it doesn't have to. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Medicare program that helps cover the cost of dental care for eligible children.
Who is eligible
Children generally qualify if they are aged between 2 and 17 for at least one day of the calendar year and the family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or another eligible payment. Medicare confirms eligibility, and we're happy to check it for you before your appointment.
What it covers
The CDBS provides up to $1,095 of eligible dental treatment per child over two consecutive calendar years. It covers common services like examinations, cleans, X-rays, fillings, fissure sealants and extractions — the everyday care most children need.
Bulk-billing at Compass Dental Care
We bulk-bill covered CDBS items directly to Medicare, which means eligible families often have nothing to pay on the day for those services. If your child ever needs care beyond the CDBS cap or outside what it covers, we'll always tell you the cost in writing first — no surprises. For a full check-up outside the scheme, a comprehensive exam starts from $98. Just mention the CDBS when you book and we'll take care of the rest.
Frequently asked questions
When should my child first see a dentist?
Around their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears — usually about 12 months of age. It sounds early, but the aim of that first visit is simply to make the dentist a familiar, friendly place, check that everything is developing normally, and give you tailored advice on brushing, feeding and habits. Starting early prevents problems and helps your child feel comfortable long before any treatment is ever needed.
Is my child eligible for bulk-billed dental (CDBS)?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers many children aged 2 to 17 whose family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other payments. It provides up to $1,095 of eligible dental treatment over two consecutive calendar years. We check your child's eligibility for you and bulk-bill the covered items directly to Medicare — so for eligible families there is often nothing to pay on the day. Just ask when you book and we'll confirm before your visit.
What if my child is scared of the dentist?
That's completely normal, and we never rush or force a nervous child. We use a gentle tell-show-do approach — explaining each step in simple words, showing the instrument, then doing it — so nothing comes as a surprise. For children who need a little extra help, happy gas (nitrous oxide) can take the edge off. Our team at Compass Dental Care is patient and judgement-free, and a first visit is often just a friendly look and a count of the teeth.
Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?
Yes — baby teeth matter a great deal. They hold space for the adult teeth, guide them into the right position, and are essential for chewing, speech and confidence. Decay in baby teeth can be painful, can cause infection, and can affect the adult teeth forming underneath. Looking after baby teeth is one of the best investments you can make in your child's long-term dental health.
What is happy gas and is it safe for children?
Happy gas is nitrous oxide — a mild, breathable sedative mixed with oxygen that helps a nervous child feel calm and relaxed while staying fully awake. It has been safely used in dentistry for children for decades, wears off within minutes once the mask comes off, and your child can go about the rest of their day as normal. If we use it, it is charged at $144 per 30 minutes; we'll always discuss whether it's helpful before your visit.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Individual results vary. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
